Performance improvement is crucial in any organization. It is not only a symbol of business growth but also a key stimulant to the improvement of the quality of services administered by the organization. Several areas need to be modified in the process improvement process of any organization. The adherence to quality is one of the key issues that need to be addressed adequately. Arguably, several areas need to be considered in the process improvement process of any given organization. Some of the areas that will be considered when boosting the productivity and the improvement of the organization are the fact that people can ensure sustainable growth. This paper seeks to establish some of the key areas that need to be modified to improve the productivity of the organization.
Primarily, one of the key determinants of quality and performance within an organization is the organization culture. The culture has a significant impact on the way people behave and the manner in which people will improve their performance and their overall capacity (Hughes, 2008). Arguably, one of the strategies that can be adopted by the organization is ensuring that the culture works to facilitate the growth and improvement of the organization. Modifying the culture to suit the organizational goals and strategies is a key strategy that is adopted by several organizations.
An organization's culture that is sensitive to the quality ensures that all employees understand the importance of quality to an organization. One such organization that has adopted a culture that is sensitive to the quality is Apple. Since the inception of the company and its leadership by Steve Jobs, the organization has always outdone the market expectations when it comes to quality. A culture that was developed by the late founder, Jobs, has prevailed to date, ensuring that all products produced by the organization are of utmost high quality. Culture plays a crucial role in influencing the overall behavior of an organization since it represents the shared values and beliefs of people working in the same environment.
One of the strategies that can be adopted to create a culture that is adherent to safety and quality is the choice of managers used within the organization. In most cases, the virtues and vices held by the managers influence the virtues and vices of the entire organization culture. One of the strategies that can be adopted to ensure that an organization is sensitive to the quality is the training of managers on the importance of quality (Process Excellence Network, 2011). Although, not as effective as hiring managers who are quality-oriented, it could help improve the quality processes of most organizations. Leadership has a critical influence on the overall behavior of all followers. Leadership focuses on people and hence has a critical impact on their overall behavior. Leaders who are sensitive to the quality will create a workforce that is equally sensitized on quality.
Safety training is one of the most important ways that an organization can invest in its employees. Safety not only reduces the cases of injuries during production, but also saves an organization a lot of money that would be lost in lawsuits and compensations for injuries encountered. Safety training is one of the ways through which any given organization can improve the safety performance of an organization. By analyzing the areas that critically undermine safety within the organization, trainers can develop a training program that teaches the workforce on how to mitigate such safety concerns (Hughes, 2008). Arguably, training managers and supervisors in safety concerns and the best approaches that could be adopted to ensure that such hazards are eliminated and avoided within the organization is equally crucial. As such, in the case of safety, training is the best approach that can be used to promote safety adherence within the workplace.
Proactive measures are equally important in managing the issue of safety within an organization. The performance improvement process of an organization in relation to safety is concerned with two major areas. Protection of employees from safety hazards and reduction of safety issues within the organization the two strategies that should be adopted to improve an organization’s adherence to quality. Arguably, a strategy that can be used proactively is protective wear. Protective wear has a critical influence on the safety of all employees. Providing employees with protective wear and garments that will reduce the cases of injuries such as helmets, overalls, safety boots and other protective clothing will significantly improve the performance in relation to safety within the organization, saving the organization much time and money (Process Excellence Network, 2011).
Adherence to quality demands a culture that is not only strict, but also quality-oriented. Some of the strategies that have been adopted by some organizations include the development of an organization culture that develops the employee capacities at all times. Training employees on the need to adhere to quality is a key trait that can be used to ensure that an organization’s quality and safety adherence. Safety training programs are some of the key strategies adopted by most organizations in improving the safety process. Some quality and safety adherent cultures have been highly effective in promoting increasingly high quality in their production process.
One of the cultural models that have been adopted to enhance the quality and promote safety in contemporary organizations is the adoption of the Kaizen culture by most Japanese companies including Toyota. Kaizen is a culture that is focused on lean production and quality products. The culture is sensitive to quality and safety while simultaneously promoting thrift and economy of both energy and resources. Such a culture can be adopted within any organization and promote efficiency. Kaizen is one of the many cultural models that have been developed by scholars and management gurus to manage quality. Kaizen emphasizes the importance of small improvements. As such, including small but noticeable changes, shifting the culture towards a quality-driven workforce can slowly change the organization’s processes and its performance in relation to safety and quality.
Performance improvement processes must be strategically implemented for them to be effective. In this case, the performance improvement process is based on improving quality and safety adherence within any organization. Primarily, the first step to achieving such an improvement understands some of the causes of poor quality or high levels of injuries within the workplace. Identifying the core sources of inefficiency within an organization is the primary step to improving an organization to achieve the desired results. Arguably, two approaches can be used in identifying such inefficiencies within an organization.
Primarily, setting targets and assessing some of the challenges that led to the failure to achieving the set targets is the first approach to identify inefficiencies within a given organization. Secondly, scrutinizing the existing system and auditing the entire process in relation to quality and safety is the other approach that can be used to assess the causes of poor quality and the low adherence to safety within an organization. Developing a system that monitors the quality at all levels of production is one of the ways to identify some of the key areas that lead to poor quality and administration of any given organization. Monitoring quality and safety at all production stages of will, help an organization identify some of the key areas that affect the quality of the product. Arguably, assessing the safety at all levels of production can also help an organization identify some of the processes that have the highest safety concerns and enable the organization to identify the root causes of poor safety within the organization, giving them the capacity to change or modify such areas to improve their quality and safety adherence.
As such, the performance improvement process of any organizations entails the adoption of several strategies that have been identified to be highly effective in other organizations. For this organization, some of the proposed strategies can be implemented to reduce the safety issues and steadily improve the quality of the products. Quality and safety adherence within an organization not only improve the productivity of employees, but also saves an organization much time and money lost by producing substandard products and lost time by employees nursing injuries. Culture is the focus area in the quality and safety PIP (performance improvement processes) of any given organization. Arguably, modifying the culture to fit the organization’s goal, which is safety and quality improvement, the organization should strive to make small but consistent changes in the culture until the desired results have been achieved.
