Reading Toni Morrison’s essay Strangers, it becomes apparent that the author mainly focuses on a fisherwoman “ sitting on the seawall at the edge of a neighbor’s garden.” The author is absolutely pleased to talk to a stranger that she never met before. All in all, subsequently, she becomes confronted with the fact that so-called “Mother Something” has somewhere gone; moreover, her story about the allowance “ to come to this spot any time she wants to fish” appears to be completely fantasized. As a result, one cannot but encounter Morrison’s gradual shift of focus from a wrongful dehumanization as well as the appropriation of a stranger to becoming aware of the need to rethink the attitude towards the unknown people.
The thing is that quite often people appear to collide with strangers; and, usually, the first thing they are involved in is an attempt to judge on them. Obviously, the judgment emerges to be based on the strangers’ appearance, the clothes they wear, etc. Nevertheless, as for Toni Morrison, she managed to draw specific attention to the issue of strangers from the perspective of much deeper awareness. Moving through the discussion essay, it is possible to come to understanding that one can hardly get rid of contemplation upon people that we used to come across by accident; evidently, it is all about the spontaneous judgment that people are prone to make right way.
Regarding Morrison’s self-criticism that one cannot but encounter while reading Strangers, it is necessary to take into account the fact that she suddenly came to understanding the entity of unknown people. Inevitably, the author realized the absurdity of idealizing the strangers, since it contradicts the common sense. Toni Morrison advanced an argument that each person possessed a little fragment of your nature; it is clear that the author elucidated it when coming across a stranger.
As for the issue whether it may be ethically wrong to write the essays communicating the theme of the strangers, I would say that, in my view, there is nothing ethically wrong about introducing real people; the only thing I would pay attention to is the need to change their names in order to prevent the recognition; altering the names as well as the appearance is likely to safeguard people from being influenced by excessive attention.
