Time lags are seen and experienced in different formats. Time lags could be best defined as the time that it takes for one process to develop and to be experienced in another facet. Lags are seen in three major formats; psychological, institutional, and technological. The following paragraphs provide examples of how these time lapses are seen in everyday life.
Psychological time lapses, or lags are seen in the mental processing of the human brain. These time lags could be experienced in different facets, or rather due to different causes. It has been noted by researchers that these lags are often seen due to stress, or the inability to process information. Research has been done to show the effects of these time lags, and the causes of these time lags. Psychological time lags as it relates to the economy is the relation between the implementation of a new process and how it relates to a work place. These time lags take effect in the economy as it relates to how an organization or company is able to implement a new process or method that may make a company more fluid or successful.
Institutional time lags are the lags or lapses in times that are seen in the institutional or company realm. For example with a social service organization, this may be seen as the time lapse that is experienced when a new societal trend is being developed, and the time it takes for legislation or mandates to come back reflect these changes. One social example that is currently being experienced is the trend for social service organizations to work with individuals with developmental disabilities to work out in the community. This is due legislation that has been recently passed in order to close shelter workshops. The institutional time lag is due to the recent law suits calling for fair wage and labor for all individuals regardless of disability across the United States. The time lag from the initial lawsuit, to the new federal mandates is a couple of years.
Lastly, with the technological time lag, this is best defined as the technology currently being used, and how it is used world-wide. Solid examples of this is the uses of cell phones. While some countries may have adopted cell phones, other countries may not have. The reasons for this could be as simple as income amongst individuals living in the company, or the availability of the products in the country. It is well established that more developed countries utilize technology, whereas less well developed countries may not adopt the more up to date technologies. By not having the same technology readily available for all individuals, and all countries, the technology lag has been created.
In essence, there are three common time lags in relation to the economy. This is due to three common factors, or psychological, institutional or technological lags. These lags relate to the economy as it takes time to process the information, or in the institutional case, time to process a growing trend.
