Abstract

This paper talks about the definition of health by WHO that was established in 1948. According to this universal definition, health is a broad term that includes various aspects of human body like physical, mental, social and spiritual wellness. This definition explains all the facets of health. It covers all the necessary points that defines the health. In this paper, the definition of health is at the center of critical thinking. Apart from these, the paper also deals with various aspects of health like physical, mental, spiritual and sociological health. The various efforts from government about bringing new policies according to various health needs of public are also described in this paper. The paper also talks about the vaccination and other health concerns from government to cover all the aspects of health completely.
According to the WHO, the definition of health is, ‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. Now, according to some schools of thoughts, the term spiritual well-being is also about to be added in this definition. In recent times, the spiritual awareness has risen to such levels that the common people are following a healthy spiritual lifestyle also to conquer he diseases from an alternative way. In addition to this, the current modern lifestyle and professional habits are filled with so much stress that people are suffering from various mental disorders. That is why, the definition of health covers all the important aspects of a human life. (Constitution of the World Health Organization. Geneva: World Health Organization; 1948).
According to the Preamble of WHO, the first pillar of health is physical health. Without proper physical health, one cannot sustain any daily wear and tear mechanism. A healthy and capable body contains a healthy mind. If physical body is filled with poison, addiction or debility, one cannot utilize the true potential and work with full capacity, (Nutter, S. 2003).
Physical health and mental health are connected very closely. That is the prime reason for the medical professionals to call all the diseases as psychosomatic disorders. Because all the diseases affect physical body and mind equally. The damage is equal in both faculty of body. Without mind, the physical body is virtually unusable. That is why the importance is given to the mental and spiritual health as well. Then comes the social well-being. In modern era, it is very important for a man to settle down and live in a socialized environment with all necessary social conventions. A man who can follow all the social rules and regulation is accepted in the society. One should have the ability to balance the personal and private life to avoid the boycott from the society. Human being is a social animal. It is also important to be completely healthy in its true sense. Mere disease-Free State of body is not enough.
In various government policies, one can find influence of this definition of health. Most of the government policies are targeting either physical, mental, spiritual or social perspective of mass. For example, mass-deworming and Iron and folic acid initiatives are very popular in developing countries health bodies. Government are very much targeting the Hb% of the people to avoid anemia in children and pregnant woman. Similarly, reducing the female and child mortality rate in the country is also prime focus of many developing countries. On the other hand, in developed countries like America, the prime health policies are focusing on reduction of Drug and alcoholic addiction and rehabilitation. There are many health policies across the globe that are focused on social well-being of the citizens. For example, legislative actions of a compulsory migration holiday for the people working in coal factories and asbestos factories for better health. Improved health insurance plan coverage for the empowerment of employees in terms of social and mental health regards. These are a few policies that focus very much on the mental well-being of people. Likewise, there are numerous such policies from various governments, to prove the aspects of the definition of health right in its true sense (Grad, Frank, 2002).
Spreading awareness is also one of the major aspect of health. Especially, in the case of communicable diseases like HIV, Ebola, Swine flu, etc. it is very important that people receive the right message and knowledge about the disease very seriously and help each other to remove the disease from their surroundings. Likewise, in the case of vaccines, the prevention of disease, even before it begins is the true prevention. Vaccination is one of the best example of the health policy that proves the definition of health in its real sense. The primary vaccination schedule of many countries covers major life-threatening diseases. The health governing bodies of most countries are in constant efforts to remove some of the diseases like polio, encephalitis, malaria and yellow fever from their countries. Similarly, many countries are making the legislative skeleton of the health services, infrastructure of the health centers and hospitals very strict for the better healthcare of the citizens. The highest level of cleanliness in the premises of a healthcare facility is the prime goal. These policies are in action to avoid hospital-generated diseases. All these policies are also one part of the health-awareness movement in the society. Likewise, primary and tertiary care for grave diseases like cancer and HIV are also under development through various government policies.

According to WHO constitution,

“Healthy development of the child is of basic importance; the ability to live harmoniously in a changing total environment is essential to such development. The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being without distinction of race, religion, and political belief, economic or social condition. The health of all peoples is fundamental to the attainment of peace and security and is dependent upon the fullest co-operation of individuals and States. The achievement of any State in the promotion and protection of health is of value to all. Unequal development in different countries in the promotion of health and control of disease, especially communicable disease, is a common danger” (Constitution of the World Health Organization. Geneva: World Health Organization; 1948).
