There are two types of forming a theory. These are the inductive and deductive type of constructing a theory. Both are much related with each other. Now, let us define each approach to know their similarities and differences. This is taken from the book “The Basics of Communication Research” by Baxter and Babbie.
Inductive Theory Construction is by the use of specific details to form a general theory based on the details. It is also not obvious that all of those specific details give out a general idea; however it does happen if the pattern has been solved. Consequently a deductive approach in theory construction is the opposite of the latter; from general to specific. The deductive reasoning could be very obvious in achieving a pattern however it is much possible to dissect more information in the general idea rather than having a scattered form of ideas. The relationship of a hypothesis to this type of approach is on how a researcher will approach the problem of his study.
The approach of the proponents could be of the two. However, if the hypotheses are many both of the approaches can be used. Evidently, the same answers are expected from both approaches. The thing that makes a difference to both approaches is on which approach the problem can be solved more easily.

In my final paper, the hypothesis on culture and sexual appeal in commercial ads can be solved through inductive approach. The gathering of information to form a conclusion; is definitely from specific to a general approach. Evidently, the problem in this study is much more accessible through inductive theory construction. For example, the proponent will get various opinions from customers of the said product (specific product) and form a hypothesis regarding the sexual and culture appeal of commercial ads.
