Peer review program refers to evaluation that is usually designed to give some feedback to instructors about both learning and teaching (Hoyt and McGoldrick, 2012). The review can be basically used for improvement in two different ways in learning institutions. To start with is the formative review whereby instructors are allowed a chance to help improve their teaching method. In addition, peer review can be used for summative review whereby it might be used as a rewarding system that is formal and that can be used in pay decisions and tenures. Generally, peer review is a situation whereby an instructor is required to discuss his performance in terms of delivering information with his or her colleagues (Wiegers, 2002).
Furthermore, the peer reviews are considered important. To start with, it provides some information that is essential about ones teaching methods which when some further advice are provided will improve the individuals way of teaching. Another importance is that through the sharing, there is also a learning process for the teachers. They will be able to compare and tell what method works best for their students and hence the method adopted by several teachers where possible. To add on this, the syllabus is also put under review and it becomes possible to determine what ought to be taught and what should also be considered less important (Weller, 2001).
Administrators are in a position to assess a number of elements that neither the students nor peers can. The elements includes of how well is the syllabus being covered. This will be determined by the responses the teacher in charge gives to the colleagues as well as the performance by the students. Another element is the instructors masterly of the area of study that he or she specializes on. Similarly to the syllabus coverage, the judgment will be based on the responses (Haag-Heitman and George, 2011).
In conclusion, peer review program as analyzed above involves discussion of the performances. This is of great importance to both the teachers and students as seen above. Therefore, school administrators should introduce the program in their schools in order to improve on performance.
