One of the most complex aspects to understand is the human development process. Child psychology is one of the fields that assist an individual understand how people think and why people act in the manner that they do. Pursuing the course was very eye opening. Primarily, I learned about the various ways through which human behavior takes shape (Lerner & Dombro, 2000, p. 23). The course introduces the learners to aspects such as growth, development, and behaviorism, showing the various challenges that humans encounter throughout their growth and development process (Nelson, Erwin & Duffy, 2012, p. 45). Additionally, child psychology equips the learner with the necessary knowledge to understand adults and identify the various root causes of their problems and current behavior.
The development covers an array of areas. Understanding the social-emotional development process was one of the best learning experiences. Primarily, social-emotional development equips a learner with the necessary knowledge to understand people with varied personalities. It also assists an individual learn how people behave and create assumptions about their past, present and possible future behaviors. Additionally, the course introduces the learner to aspects such as parenting (Meggitt, 2007, p. 23). The course ensures that a learner understands how a child reasons and the best approaches that can be employed to reason with the child. It also gives free parenting advice that will come in handy in the future for all learners.
My thinking has changed since I undertook the course greatly. Primarily, I stopped judging people by their actions. With an understanding that people behave the way they do mostly due to the environment they grow up in, one becomes more understanding and less judgmental (Daniel, Wassell, & Gilligan, 2010, p. 130). Additionally, I started changing the way I behaved and altered my priorities in life. Child psychology as a discipline, not only equips one with the necessary knowledge to assist others, but also equips the learner with the ample knowledge to understand him or herself better (Bukatko, & Daehler, 2012, p. iv). As such, taking the course has had positive influences on my career, my interactions with others and my behavior as well.
However, there are some changes that I would desire pertaining to my academic skills. Primarily, my main objective is to learn various psychology disciplines and fuse the knowledge acquired while undertaking child psychology. It would ensure that I have a detailed understanding of the entire development process, from childhood to old age (Vialle, Lysaght & Verenikina, 2000, p. 34). Additionally, I would also hope to improve my academic skills by creating the habit of extensive personal reading on the psychology (Child Magazines, 2015, p. 1). I also believe that experience is equally important. Currently, I possess a great deal of theoretical knowledge about child psychology. However, fusing such knowledge with experience is as equally as important. As such, introducing a practicum platform for the course is a course modification that the designers should consider as well (Reinsberg, 2009, p. 1).
