Personal Statement

As the saying goes, nothing worth having ever comes easy. Throughout my academic experience, I am no stranger to failure and frustration, but each time I have proven that with the right mindset and dedication I can achieve my goals in life. Business, Accounting and Finance have always been my passion. I dream of one day running my own business with my family and friends. But before I get there I know that I have to increase my competence and one of the best ways is to seek admission in a graduate program. My short term goals include graduating with a master’s degree in Business or Accounting and pass the CPA exam. I view these goals as the great foundation for my career. I am aiming to gain more practical exposure in the fields of business and accounting that will show me aspects of my personality that I need to improve.
My desire to earn my master’s degree not only roots from increasing my skills and knowledge but also to prove what I can do. My academic life has not been easy. I recall failing my accounting concentration class twice where my profession even suggested me to shift majors. It was mentally draining on my part because I really wanted to become an accountant but my grades do not appear to be cooperating with my desires. To be honest, shifting crossed my mind, but I felt that if I did I was betraying my own dreams. Despite what my professor said, I held on to my dream and grabbed my last chance in the course. I doubled my efforts and in the end graduated with an Accounting degree. During that moment I surprised not only myself but also my professor who advised me to shift. When she heard that I was planning to apply for a graduate program, she agreed to write me a recommendation letter to support my ambition. Proud was an understatement to describe the emotions I was feeling during my graduation, majority of the other students who took the same major ended up transferring to either the Finance or Marketing department but I hung on.
I know my GPA do not reflect the kind of effort I put in order to earn my degree but I can say that once I am admitted to the graduate program, I will display my brand of enthusiasm and dedication towards accounting. I read a powerful statement saying the ‘grades are not everything’, I am not saying that they do not mean anything, but sometimes they quantify people but do not give justice to the amount of effort individuals put in their works. This opportunity means a lot to me because it will give me a chance to start again and do better. I know what I am capable of doing and I just need a shot to prove it. I do enjoy analyzing market trends and wants to look for innovative solution to address current business problems. I volunteered as a bookkeeper in a restaurant for over a year. The experience provided me with exposure in the actual work setting. The fields of accounting and business will instill within me critical and analytical thinking especially in handling difficult circumstances and making decisions.
What I can offer outside of my dedication is my background in business. I own a business and I am hands-on in terms of its operation. Although it is still small, just like my dreams I know it is a start of something greater. My experiences in life have taught me the values of resilience and responsibility. No matter what challenges come my way, I can always look back and say that I managed to pull through failure so I can do it again. Success does not come without failure, and I know that each time I fail the greatest thing I can get from the experience is wisdom. I can share those to other people and hopefully positively influence their lives. I challenging nature of accounting serve as my inspiration to work harder to achieve my career and life goals.
