Women have faced many challenges that make them vulnerable. Their earnings are affected by the nature of the responsibilities that come with the female gender. Job interruptions due to factors such as breastfeeding and more holidays than their male partners contribute towards low incomes by women. These factors make women earn less than male workers hence reducing women’s financial freedom and capabilities. Moreover, people with gender issues such as gay people have been treated with suspicion by the society (Mann 20).
Women on a full-time employment earn about two-thirds of what their male partners earn. This means that women have to work approximately extra days in order to make what men earn. Married women earn less than young, unmarried women. This is attributed to the responsibilities that come with motherhood. Women have to balance between having time for their kids and working. Understanding that children’s character is shaped by the activities that they engage in from their childhood, mothers have a solemn obligation to instil the right values to their children. They have no option for this responsibility. Therefore, they leave their workplace while the young and childless women and men work more.
Moreover, failure by some employers to give paid maternity leave cuts the incomes earned by women. Maternity leave is a mandatory break for every woman. It has no alternative. Therefore, women must be fully entitled to all remunerations even during the leave. However, women working particularly part-time do not get such remunerations. For the entire period of maternity leave, their incomes reduce to almost zero thus widening the gap between men and women incomes.
Additionally, gender issues affect people belonging to the gay community. As the author states, the gay soldier was discriminated against. People have different feelings about the gay and lesbian people. The debate on whether the society should fully accept them remains a hot topic. For many years, gay and lesbian people have been viewed by many people as lost people. However, progress has been made and such groups of people are becoming accepted by the society. There is no alternative than to give freedom of choice to every adult of sane mind to do what they feel is good provided they do not interfere with the rights of others.
Gender issues form a significant part of the debate in the world. Over many years, one gender has been taken as being superior to the other. Also, new issues are coming up around gender. The debate on the possible third gender of people who do not belong to either male or female genders is alive. Furthermore, there are issues with the gay community who are treated with suspicion by many people.
