One of the main objectives of the first articles is to articulate the homophobia in straight men. The different circumstances that individuals find themselves mean that they will always encounter instances that they are not willing to participate in. I felt that some of the inmates had to behave in a certain manner because they did not have any other available options. Homophobia in straight men is thus created by the circumstances that one finds themselves in and not of their own liking. The various circumstances that inmates find themselves in force themselves to be ‘gay’ for their own safety. I felt that according to them, they are better for being the sexual partner of one person than being gang raped by many other prisoners constantly.
The issue of masculinity plays a vital role in whether one is considered gay or straight. During the reading, I felt that if one had soft muscles, then other prisoners had the option of treating them as of lesser equals and thus wanted to dominate them. The issue of dominance is normally articulated when there is a debate about masculinity and feminism. Masculine men are supposed to provide for their feminine counterparts. This is why in the reading, I felt that one inmate made the choice of acting out to be completely feminine so that the most masculine prisoner could protect ‘her’. Another important factor to consider on the issue of male dominance over others is the first impression. I felt that the prison warder gave the correct advice in that in the very first instance, had the ‘gay’ prisoner acted tough, then nobody could have messed with him thereafter. All in all the issue of homophobia in straight men continues to persist, and measures to deal with the problem must be created.
In the second reading about the growth in the women and children trafficking industry, I was astonished by the blatant descriptions of the extent in which human traffickers go to make their ends meet. Some of the traffickers conceal their services behind some false advertising while others do not even bother to conceal their heinous acts. Actually I learnt that the issue of kidnapping in underage girls in the Philippines and in Thailand is very rampant. The problem is not only present in the Middle East countries but also in the United States.
For me, the most significant aspect of the issue of human trafficking that I could deduce was the fact that the process is facilitated by the demand for the sex. If there were no demand for the sex, then there could have been very few instances of human trafficking. Additionally, the problem of human trafficking is compounded by the little law enforcement on the sector and the high levels of corruptions to ensure that the process continues unabated.
Alternatively, this could be as a result of the demand for better living where one is promised, and yet the real issue is disguised to unsuspecting young girls. The issue is also related to opportunity in that the individuals who are in high positions of the government can exploit the less fortunate in the society so that they can make extra money. In the future the problem should be dealt with as is this is a proven fact that there exist several instances of organized crime. The control of other people is an infringement of their rights, and the governments of the countries involved should step up their efforts in a bid to eradicate the vice.
