"A Rose For Emily" was the most well-known and famous work a master of short stories - William Faulkner. “A Rose For Emily” describes the very essence Gothic and grotesque – every piece of this story full of violence, gloom and darkness. It is possible to sat that this short story is an excellent example of author’s style as one can observe plenty of Gothic images. The main character in this story is a young and very mysterious girl – Miss Emily. Throughout the whole story, we can see the development and change of this person from a young and pretty girl to a quail and then to the insane murderer.
It is essential to say that Emily has a lot of significant traits and features of a person's character: she is unfortunate, lonely and very stubborn girl. Furthermore, at the end of the story one can see that she is a necrophile. Thus, it is obvious to say that she is a very interesting character to analyze.
Being a very rich young girl that is well-known among Bohemian people, she, however, spent most of the life in house, physically and spiritually sealed. Emily’s family was a famous one until her father’s death. After his death, Emily became very lonely, citizens almost never saw her after that. One may say that main character began to fade with the time. However, such loneliness made her almost insane. (Smith) Due to such psychological trauma, it is safe to say that her loneliness change her into a very stubborn and inadequate person (Miglioretto). Moreover, one can find a description of her house as “stubborn and coquettish” (Faulkner 1). And as we know, a house represents and mirrors its owner’s character, appearance (Miglioretto). Besides, it is known that she had a lot of money, bequeathed from her father, yet when main character received letters from the city’s administration she refused to pay her taxes.
It is possible to assume that, she decided not to pay taxes and refused to listen to the city officials that came to her to talk. Emily understood that she what she was doing is wrong; however with deeper analysis of the situation, it is clear that she was ignoring the situation. She has been living with her father for decades, and he was responsible for paying the taxes. It is possible to assume, that not paying taxes, showing her stubbornness, Emily tried to persuade herself that her father is not dead. Another example of stubbornness in her character interwove with another interesting aspect of Emily’s life – necrophilia. Generally, it was her unwillingness to let go her lover – Homer, by killing and preserving his body. It was impossible for her to bear the rejection. The death of her friend is the result of her stubbornness.
