The following is the summary of “Narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglass” (Douglass, 2012).

The boy is the slave for the family of Master’s Hugh since seven years. During his slavery, he had learned the ability to read and write. He was fortunate to have a mistress in that family, who was very kind-hearted woman. The Mistress taught him the initials of reading and writing. Her kid nature forced her to help him with acquiring education. On the contrary, her husband was a big wrath in this aspect, and he averted the Mistress from teaching the boy. Hence, the attitude of the Mistress changed rapidly towards the boy. He was no more taught by her, in fact; the Mistress got so strict that she always kept an eye on him and prevented his exposure to any newspaper and books. The Mistress tried to make sure that the boy does not get an opportunity to learn to read and write. Consequently, the boy made friends with the street boys who taught him to read. The boy made these boys his teachers during his visits for completing any tasks. The boy is grateful to those street boys but cannot name them as he was taught the rule in Christian country which indicates that slave ad education cannot go along.
