Good Example Of The Debate On Contraception Essay

The use of contraception as protection from accidental pregnancy of women has long been the topic of debates between the scientific and the religious community. More often than not, people tend to believe in what the church says to them, especially those who closely live by the laws and the beliefs of the church. In a way, this can be seen as a public opposition since most people actually oppose the use of contraception as protection in pre-marital sex, some cringe just from hearing “premarital sex”.
Ideally, a man and a wife should not engage in sex before their marriage. But today, pre-marital sex has become a way of life. According to “Trends in premarital sex in the United States, 1954-2003”, a study by Lawrence Finer, ninety-five percent of those that are interviewed in 2002 was reported to have engaged with pre-marital sex. It was concluded in the study that “almost all Americans have sex before marrying”. However, abstinence is still said to be the best way to avoid unwanted pregnancy. The thing is, even for married couple, it is said that contraception is a sin. In an article by Ronald Conte Jr., he stated that “couples who use contraception are attempting to gain control over procreation.” It is seen as unwillingness to conceive a child.
But, the numbers have spoken and the percentage of people engaging with pre-marital sex is high. It is also apparent that for countries who are struggling against overpopulation, high maternal and infant mortality rate, and poverty, contraception is the best way to at least alleviate such. Sex is a part of human life and if there are ways to minimize the harmful effects of this act, should we be stopped from exploring those options? Finer’s study only proves that a better provision and education for people is needed in order to protect themselves from any hazards.
