Abortion act remains one of the controversial issues facing the society following the moral, practical and ethical consideration surrounding it. However, abortion remains to be illegal to many countries although it is allowed under unavoidable circumstances. Some of the circumstances may include social, personal or economic reasons. Ideally, this means that the abortion laws differ widely from one nation to another. This paper focuses on discussing the provisions of abortion act and the preference utilitarian strengths and weaknesses from the society moral and ethical perception (Callahan 66).
Preference utilitarianism has some strength with relation to the abortion law act. The abortion provisions hold that abortion is illegal and it is allowed under certain exemptions as discussed above. Preference utilitarianism offers the society members to handle the abortion issue with reference to their satisfaction. Ideally, this is to mean that members can carry out abortion in case one is not comfortable. However, this may be against the law act and moral theory provisions.
On the other hand, the main weakness of the preference utilitarianism with respect to abortion is that it may encourage women to carry out abortion without limits. As a result, it may increase the abortion rates in the society. Ideally, this issue is against the moral theory provisions that hold that abortion is illegal unless certain circumstances when it is unavoidable (Odell, 234).
In conclusion, abortion remains an illegal act in most of the societies. The application of utilitarianism theory in abortion issue may lead to more harmful acts that are against the ethical conduct and the moral theory. Therefore, it is important for the society to follow the abortion law act and apply the utilitarianism theory with a condition that yields strengths and not weaknesses.
