Scientific advancements aim to improve peoples’ ways of living. Scientists and academics provide us with options and alternatives to go through our daily lives. Though they mean well, their innovations take years to be accepted. As illustrated by E.M. Rogers in his Diffusion of Innovations theory, society cannot easily adopt innovations. A recent example is the acceptance of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) and their food products.
GMOs are used to improve the quality and quantity of food, while lowering the prices. Both producers and consumers should be able to benefit from this technology. GM plants and/or animals are more tolerant to pests, they could be enriched with vitamins and minerals necessary to improve the resistance and immue system of humans, and they can contribute to the conservation and preservation of our environment as they use less hazardous synthetic chemicals. They undergo specific and vigorous health assessments by the Word Health Organization (WHO) before distribution. GM foods are feared to cause allergies, transfer of genes, and immunity to antibiotics – which means they could cause irritiation physically and physiologically, immunity from herbicides and pesticides of wild species like weeds and pests, and humans can also develop immunity from certain drugs (Duvauchelle).
However, scientists believe that people are overreacting on their fears of GM foods. For one, religious sectors disapprove GM foods due to the thinking that scientists are “playing God”; two, domestic households fear for the harmful effects of GMOs to their families. These are fears can be eradicated by more efforts of informing the people of what GM foods really are. Effective communication is the key for the acceptance of the people. Personally, I accept GMOs, GM foods, GM plants and animals. At the rate we’re going, we can deplete our natural resources and develop more severe types of illnesses. GMOs can be the key for the preservation of life.
