Outdoor Volleyball Divergence Essay

The sport volleyball was originated in the United States in 1895 by William G. Morgan where it was called mintonette. Morgan created this game for the classes of businessmen and decided to combine together the fundamentals of baseball, basketball, handball and tennis which require fewer bodily interactions than basketball. Morgan raised the net borrowed from the tennis of about six feet and 6 inches overhead. In 1896, a professor from the Springfield College proposed the name volleyball to the said game since the players are volleying the back over the net, back and forth. Many years later, there is a need for the standard rules to be applied, thus, the United States Volleyball Association was created in in 1928. Beach volleyball was introduced in California which was played in the sand court consisting of two players. Decades have passed, volleyball became part of the Olympics (Encyclopedia Britannica).
This game is played by all ages, by pairs or teams, and can be done indoor or outdoor and requires passing, blocking, setting and spiking of volleyball. Its goal is for the ball to touch the ground in the court of the opponent and without hitting or touching the net and to prevent it from returning to own court. The opponents should not let the ball to touch the ground just within the court. The players may hit or touch the ball three times or more. Players can use the set up, spike or an attack or combinations of these in order to hit the ball to the opponent (Quora).
Focusing on the outdoor volleyball, there are differences in terms of surface, number of players and others compare to indoors volleyball. One of the differences is the number of players. In the indoor volleyball, typically there are six players against six players while in the outdoor volleyball only requires two players of each team. The six players have the particular position and multifaceted rotation and switches throughout the game. The two players have no particular position but only the right and left side of the court (Active). In the outdoor, no player should hit the ball twice. After one player receives and passes the ball, the other player is the one who will hit the ball over the net. On the other hand, in the indoor volleyball there are many players who could set, hit, attack or spike and block the ball for the offense and defense. (Fittodo).
Another difference is the surface like sand court and playing without shoes (Fittodo). Unlike indoor volleyball and also basketball, outdoor requires the sand which significantly serves as the neutralizer for the jumping and running of the players (Quora).  There is the chance for more shots to be subtle on a sand surface than in the indoor game. The measurement of the court in the outdoor game is eight meters by eight meters while the indoor have an additional of one meter wide. It implies that the outdoor volleyball players of occupy or cover sixty-four square meters divided by the two. Each will cover thirty two square meters. Unlike the indoor game, covers eighty one square meters so roughly when divided into six players roughly each will occupies fourteen square meters. There is a greater challenge for the outdoor game because of the space it occupies, thus, this game involves less power play and more on the control style (Quora).
With regard to the ball used in this game, the outdoor ball is heavier than the indoor one which is made of leather. The outdoor ball is a little bit bigger, softer and lighter that allows it to float in the air and letting the players to use the weather as the advantage. Unlike the outdoor, the indoor game have heavier ball which requires power to move quicker and hit harder. In the scoring system, the outdoor game usually played the best-of-three series with twenty one point in each series while the indoor is twenty five point to cover. The tiebreaker set is only fifteen points if necessary (Active).
Environment affects the strategies used in outdoor game. The passing, tossing, setting and serving will be different when there is rain, wind and sun. These strategies will become heavy and slow when it rains and the ball will drop aggressively if there is wind. Another interesting strategy is on predicting the opponent’s actions therefore the other players defend or attack the projected part of the court. The outdoor game had no back row or front row unlike the indoor game. The player will be the blocker or digger and the other one will be the defender (Quora). The most important of all is to physical stamina, strategic mind, team work and attitude towards this outdoor game.
