The United States is considered as one of the most democratic nations in the world. This is particularly in reference to the nation’s social and political institutions. The nation is heralded as one where every person, who has any kind of aspirations, can pursue them with minimal interference from both the government as well as the rest of the society.
National elections are often considered to be a gauge of a country status of democracy. The extent to which citizens are freely allowed to run for political office and the extent, to which voters are free to vote for their favorite candidates with minimal interference, is used as a measure of the democracy of a given nation.
The United States elections, which happens after every four years, can be considered to be significantly democratic. This is especially in regards to the individuals who can successfully run for office. Ideally, any person, who wishes to run for political office, should be allowed to do so. The only restrictions if any should be only those that are meant to ensure that those, who run for office, are sufficiently qualified and have the ability to serve the people. Restrictions based on social factors such as race, religion, gender or ethnicity should not be present.
One of the factors that determine who can successfully run for office in the United States is the availability of a democratic vetting process. All the candidates who express an interest in running for office are exhaustively vetted to ensure that they meet the qualifications that have been laid out by the constitution. An examination of these factors shows that they are meant to ensure that only the best candidates run and those who have the capability to serve the people well run for office. Others might argue that some of the minimal qualifications requirements laid out are discriminatory but the reality is that they are not. Factors such as a serious criminal record which automatically expunge one from political office consideration are meant to ensure that only honest people without criminal inclinations run for office. In addition, education requirements are meant to ensure that those running for office are well endowed with knowledge and information that will come in handy once they ascend to office and once the responsibility to serve the people is endowed on them. Therefore, the existence of a well-constructed set of requirements and qualifications for every person running for office ensures that every citizen can run for election if they have met these requirements. The stand out issue is that these requirements are not based on social factors such as race, religion, ethnicity or gender which if considered would make the process undemocratic.
In addition, conducting campaigns in the United States is an interference-free venture, and any individual is not restricted in any manner from conducting campaigns with the hope of capturing a certain political seat. Normally, some individuals, corporates or institutions may try to frustrate some people from conducting political campaigns but the United States Constitution fully protects and grants rights to all interested individuals to conduct their campaigns freely, explores their views and opinion to the public and therefore win them over. Cases of interference or intimidation to political aspirants are treated as criminal offences.
In a nutshell, elections in the United States are both theoretically and practically democratic. As observed, there are few things that limit people from contesting for political seats and virtually anyone with relevant qualifications can run for office.
