Sample Essay On Epidemiology – Most Celebrated Contributor
The study of effects that health and diseases have on the overall population is what is called as Epidemiology. This is a very important subject of the wider public health domain. In layman terms, the subject deals with the understanding of causation of death and diseases. The most celebrated epidemiologist since the time when it initiated as a subject is Hippocrates. He is amongst the founders of the field, and there is no one who has given more to it than him. Although there are several other scientific minds and contributors, Hippocrates stands out as the most prominent one in terms of contributions.
He contributed to increasing the knowledge stock using not one, but both the means through which diseases are caused, namely rational and supernatural means. These two means are mostly supported in against of each other, when this happens; most of the literature available becomes to have taken one side. With Hippocrates, he explained both the means as being responsible for the causation of diseases.
He was the first person to have ever discussed the effect of deaths and diseases on the population. He introduced epidemiological concepts in his three early books named Epidemic I, Epidemic III and Air Waste. He can also be considered as the biggest contributor to the field because he was the first one to differentiate between an Endemic and an Epidemic. He clarified that the difference between them is that the former occurs with a constant frequency in a given community whereas the later attacks suddenly and spreads very quickly through the population and that it mostly is a more deadly disease since cure is not available for it readily.
