Dear Sir,

RE: SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN THE DORMITORY AT STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY
I am a student at Stony Brook University, and I commute to the university everyday as I don’t live in the school dormitory. I however, have friends who stay in the dormitory so I know what life is like for them. I am writing to inform you about the possibility of sexual assaults in the university dormitory. The issue has been persistent for an articulable time frame due to the freedom that the students have in accessing any room regardless of their gender. Both male and female students can access each other’s rooms without any restriction whatsoever.
The male students pay frequent visits to the female student’s rooms, a situation that has led to an increase in the chances of sexual assaults. It becomes difficult for the female students to help themselves at such scenarios due to the privacy of the rooms. The issue of sexual assault in the dormitory has become a center of discussion for both residents and nonresident students. There is an evidence of sexual assault in the student’s Facebook page, which I could print as evidence.
Sexual assault is greatly affecting the female student’s academic performance and achievements. Some of the female students end up dropping their courses due to the embarrassments that lead to low self-esteem. I think that informing you about the current situation could assist because at your capacity, you are capable of addressing the issue.
At my capacity, I request you to take the responsibility and implement strategies of preventing sexual violence, in order to ensure equal educational rights to all students regardless of gender. I would suggest that the institution makes boundaries between the female and male students’ rooms through building different dormitories for each of them.

Resident Students
Stony Brook University

Dear resident students

RE: SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN THE DORMITORY AT STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY
I am one of the resident students in the university dormitory. I would like to bring to your attention the issue of sexual assault that has been taking place in the dorm. It is as a result of free interaction of the male and female students in their rooms without any restriction. As noted, the university dormitory is not partitioned to accommodate students according to gender. Sexual violence in the dorm is issues that people both within and outside the campus are talking about. It is an alarming issue that is drawing the attention of the university stakeholders (parents, students, and the society) and the surrounding community. The problem has forced the affected female students to drop their courses due to the embarrassment that lowers their self-esteem. It becomes difficult for the female students to withstand the attention that is drawn to them in case such an act happens to them. Hence, it becomes difficult for them to continue with their course work in the face of the shame that they incur. The assault leads to their poor academic performance. It is the responsibility of both the faculty and the students to ensure that the problem of sexual violence within the institution is eliminated.

Solutions to sexual assaults in the dormitory

The resident students are capable of assisting the administration to stop the issue on discussion. It is the responsibility of all the students both resident and nonresident, to observe the rules outlined in the students’ website concerning their housing. The New York Times website also provides guidelines on housing of university students. The rules outlined in both websites gives clear guidance on housing rules due to cases of sexual harassment on female students which have been reported in the past years I would suggest the solution to the issue of sexual assault as shifting gender boundaries building. The female and male students ought to have separate dormitories to prevent the access of each other’s rooms. Restrictions in accessing an opposite gender’s room ought to be kept in place. There is evidence that male students often visit the female student’s rooms and hold parties (Oehme 17). The results of such free interactions are the sexual assaults of the female students. It happens in the rooms because they sustain a lot of privacy and the female students hardly get help from their colleagues. It is essential to note that my solution of diving and shifting the gender boundaries building could help to eliminate occurrences of sexual assault. The organization’s management can make rules and regulations that the students are required to adhere to, in order to avoid such acts from being mentioned within the university fraternity.
Being resident students in the university dormitory, we have experienced cases of sexual assaults to our fellow female students. As witnesses of the cases and the consequences of the outcomes to the fraternity: female students drop their academics due to the shameful experiences, we have to embrace the changes that would be made as a result of the suggested solution. We ought to support the suggested solution without any reason to object it. To protect the rights of each student, the solution would help as we ought to pay close attention to the solution after implementation. It is essential for all the resident students to cater for the well-being of each other while we strive to succeed. We can only achieve this by ensuring that we lead as good examples so that cases of sexual assault will not be mentioned within the university now and in the future. Our consciousness should lead us to care for each other, and promote humanity rather than the barbaric act that stagnates the dreams of the female students who experience the sexual violence.
As students, we ought to influence the institution’s administration to take action and implement the suggested solution as it will solve the problem of sexual assault. According to the research carried out concerning the problem, the suggested solution could help to eliminate sexual harassment as the set rules and boundaries would pose the restrictions on room access and the associated consequences in the case that the rules are broken. The management needs to implement the suggested solutions to address the problem and to ensure security to the female students who are affected by the issue of sexual assault.
