Free Movie Review On The Misfortunes Of The Lost Generation

As I watched the short film from Doc Zone- Generation Jobless, an unpleasant reality began to sink in. I began to question the purpose of higher education, wondering if it was worth the time and money that individuals invest into it. Based on the evidence provided in the film, I would say that the choice for attending university may need to be reconsidered by the young people of this generation. I am not suggesting that one should completely rule out the idea of pursuing his or her education because the knowledge is valuable for the individual; however, a new paradigm must be created for young adults to properly prepare for their futures.
Most of us have assumed that if we obtain a college education, that we will likely succeed in fruitful careers to support ourselves through life. These ideas have been ingrained in us by our parents, grandparents, and other influential people in our lives. Unfortunately the information from the film concern me as I think of the direction Canada is headed. Not only Canada, but the global shift in jobs is a trend that requires a new format for the youth to adjust their educational plan to fit the new format of the global workplace.
I could not help but to cringe as I watched a scene in the restaurant with a staff of servers who were all college educated and stuck in a dead end job that had nothing to do with their educational background. If my goal is to work in a restaurant, then spending four or more years and thousands of dollars at a university seem pointless. The only hopeful system of education seemed to be the Co-op University of Regina where students were properly trained and guaranteed support in obtaining a job after college. It seems that if more universities would switch to this method of educating the students, there is more hope for the future. Of course, then there is the problem of the lack of jobs that are available with so many areas of life becoming automated.
The Swedish system seems to be a workable solution to the problem that the Canadian education system is lacking; however, if the government, businesses, and educational systems were even willing to reconsider restructuring the way the country functions, there is still the matter of time. Too much time is needed for the transition, which does not help in the interim. A grim reality is what I think many of the younger generation are facing.
Our expectations of life must change, just like the group of students discussed in the film. The life that generations prior had, are not going to be the normal way of life for the younger people. Accepting this new model of education, work, and life are what needs to be understood by the population who is going to be living in this new era. I do not know what that will look like for everyone, after all each person has different circumstances and paths that will be chosen. Making a statement to guarantee a secure future through education is not advice that parents should continue to give their children anymore. Instead, provide the kids with truth and knowledge about what combination of decisions to make in maximizing their opportunity to find work and begin life without large debt. Those are my final thoughts as I conclude the essay on the Doc Zone- Generation Jobless.
