Reflection on “Polygamy” by Moulavi Chiragh Ali

In this response to Rev, MacColl who has accused Muslims of the degradation of women, Ali makes the argument that Muhammad, through his teachings and the Quran has actually improved their station in Muslim society. Prior to his teachings, women were treated like property, not human beings. Muhammad instructed that these practices were wrong and that women should be respected.
On the subject of polygamy, Muhammad instructed that men could have no more than four wives and if he could not treat them all fairly and equitably then he should limit himself to one wife. Guardians of young female wards were prohibited from marrying these girls. It is prohibited that sons may not marry the wife or daughters of his deceased father. By abolishing slavery, Muhammad effectively eliminated the keeping of concubines. It is also strictly prohibited for a father to murder his infant daughter as was custom form many centuries.

Ali compares the manner in which Muslim women are treated to the way Christians, Jews and pagans treated their women through the centuries which was poorly. Europeans were only recently treating their women respectfully only because of hundreds of years of civilization. The Christian New Testament does not set down practices for the better treatment of women.
Ali’s argument is a sound one. Historically speaking, Muslims are the only religion that have a written set of laws that dictate the proper treatment of women. No other religion has a set of laws comparable to the Quran.
