Television Rots Your Mind Essay Samples
People have over the decades used television for various reasons. They use it mainly for entertainment and news. If you keenly observe the use of television, you will realize that the harmful effects are more than the sound effects to the brain of a person. It is due to this reason that television rots the minds of people. There are a lot of reasons as they have been explained below as to why television negatively affects the brains of people (Ouellette, 2013).
First, television has no educational benefits to children who are under the age of 2. It takes most of the time that the children can use to develop and grow their brains. Such brain development activities include real interaction with people and playing. Real interaction with people and actual play makes the children learn more things that help in the development of their brains. Viewing people on a video has less development to the brain of the child (Barker & Petley, 2013).
Second, if a person spends a lot of their time watching TV, it leads to depression. Depression hinders proper brain development because it is not actively involved in the thinking process. If such like a condition continues for a very long time, then such people can develop psychiatric problems. If such problems develop, then the person may end up dead or dumb.
Television also helps in rotting the brain when it slips the mind into a hypnotic state within seconds of watching. It puts the viewer into a sleep-like hypnotic state. Such like a condition provides an easy access to a subconscious state. This is one reason it is easy for one to fall asleep while watching television (Sigman, 2007).
In addition, watching TV makes brain activity to switch from the left side that performs logical thinking and critical analysis, to the right side. It, for this reason, makes it hard for one to think and make a rational decision especially when watching TV. A part of the brain to the right side does not analyze the incoming information critically. It instead uses an emotional response that results in little or no analysis of the information. A person finds themselves believing anything they are told without doing any research or thinking further (Ouellette, 2013).
Watching television creates both the psychological and physical addiction. The act causes the body to release certain chemicals that make the body feel good. The chemicals are endorphins that have similar features to those of heroin. Constant daily exposure to TV is a critical factor in the brain programming. Someone who is not able to watch their favorite program is likely to display withdrawal symptoms similar to those of a drug addict (Barker & Petley, 2013).
Viewing of TV reduces higher activities of the brain. It promotes activity especially in lower brain regions. It makes a person to behave like an animal because of the reduced intelligence. Advertisers target the brain region called the reptilian brain. It is responsible for primitive and primal urges like sex, feeding, and power. These are the themes that advertisers do use commonly in advertising campaigns to make people think that they need a particular product. It convinces one to believe that they cannot do without a certain product (Sigman, 2007).
Excessive viewing of television is also linked to brain disorders. These diseases are degenerative and come later in life. The disorders are dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. In some chronic cases, the disorders can lead to death or permanent damage to the brain. In addition, it leads to a short attention span. It also increases the risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children. The condition is also associated with changes that occur with frequent scene changes that are linked to modern-day edits in videos (Ouellette, 2013).
In conclusion, television viewing has more harmful effects on the brain than the good thus leads to rotting of the brain in various ways. The methods have been explained in precise ways. People should thus learn when to watch television and for which reasons. It also affects children I even more severe ways.
