Summary

Joel Stein defines millenials as individuals who were born during the 1980’s until the year 2000 where computers make things easier. Social media have caused young adults suffer from narcissism- a personality disorder. He describes these individuals as technology-addicts, overconfident, materialistic and self-involved. The digital media fuels this narcissistic attitude through the reality shows in television that features people who overly loved themselves and post every single thing that they do. For millenials, Iphones, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat are basic needs.

Reaction

Stein’s article is both meaningful and interesting. Indeed, technology and urbanization have brought several changes to the present society. It caused the young generation to develop some bad habits like frequently looking at their phones during classes. Traditional photos of family members have been replaced by the “me” photos or “me and my pet” pictures in their facebook accounts.
Stein treats the issue with fairness. After discussing the negative consequences of technological innovation among young individuals, he switches to the brighter side of the issue. It is true that technology have made the new generation more empowered. It molds them to become positive thinkers. The purpose of technological advancements is always for good- to make life easier. It allows people to connect to anyone around the globe and have their opinions heard. And make them matter. Lastly, it depends on the person how he will view and react to changes and how he will use such change to discover better ways of accomplishing things. The new generation is lucky to have existed in an era where they can do things in a simpler and faster way.
