It is important for the criminal justice system to determine why certain crimes are prevalent more than others. With the Uniform Crime Reports, the criminal justice system has been able to achieve its goals of knowing the most prevalent crimes and in which areas. The Uniform Crime Reporting is the official collection of data of crimes published by the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) in the United States. The program is run by the federal government and it provides data that is used to estimate crime rates and occurrences. The UCR program is known to report offenses such as assault, murder, burglary, forcible rape, arson, car theft, burglary, and larceny (FBI, 2004). According to Schmalleger, murder crimes are the first on the Uniform Crime Reports (2009). In addition to reporting, the UCR collects the statistics of the above crimes and their history. Their main aim is to gather information and statistics that can be reliable to law enforcers in administering justice and ensuring the safety of the people. In addition, with their reports, the law enforcers are able to find new strategies to curb crime in the society. The information generated by the UCR is given to the FBI which in turn is used to track criminals and to curb crime activities in our states. The Uniform Crime Reporting bases its statistics on accuracy and this makes their information reliable and helpful to the criminal justice information system.
In the field of criminal justice, Uniform Crime Reporting is important in several ways. First, through the Uniform Crime Reports, the law enforcement system is able to know the number of crimes committed in a certain state or region. In addition, the UCR is useful in the field of criminal justice because it helps in comparing crimes occurring in various regions year by year and this is important for any criminal justice information system. In addition, the Uniform Crime Reporting helps the law enforcers to find new ways to deal with criminals and serious crimes in the society (Schmalleger, 2009). With the statistical information from the Uniform Crime Reports, law enforcers can develop new technology which can highly help in collecting evidence against suspects and the conviction of criminals.
The UCR is useful in the field of criminal justice because, with the reports, it is easy to determine regions where crime rates are higher and be able to combat crime in those places. Furthermore, the criminal justice system is able to know the types of crimes committed and its occurrences (FBI, 2004). This is vital information to the criminal justice system because; they will be able to plan on how they can curb specific crimes in specific places. In addition, with the statistics from the Uniform Crime Reporting, the criminal justice system can enact new laws on dealing with crime and criminals because they now have a clear picture of the crimes in the society.
Moreover, the Uniform Crime Reports show the major changes of crime rates in different parts of the nation and this helps determine the rime rates. In addition, the UCR can help determine the number of people arrested, and charged and the crimes they committed. Initially, only crimes reported to the law enforcement authorities were dealt with, but with the Uniform Crime Reports, crimes are dealt with accordingly. Moreover, through their statistics, it easier to know the number of people who were killed, assaulted, and even raped because they always gather these statistics (FBI, 2004). It is also easier to know the crimes that are on the rise and those declining through Uniform Crime Reports.
The information provided by the Uniform Crime Reports is not only extremely useful to law enforcers, but also useful for criminologists, the media, legislators, sociologists, legislators, the media, and for research purpose. The UCR is able to generate the actual number of criminals arrested and for what crime, and this makes it very useful to the criminal justice system. Even though they are not able to report on the reported crimes, they are able to know the types of criminal activities happening in certain areas.
In conclusion, the Uniform Crime Report programs are very vital to the criminal justice system and the government. The government is able to gather and collect data as well as monitoring criminals with the help of the UCR. The UCR is able to collect data on all crimes being committed in certain states and these statistics are published by the federal government. Through the Uniform Crime Reports, the FBI is able to determine the number of crimes solved. The Uniform Crime Reporting program is a special unit that provided a link between the FBI and the local law enforcement groups. In addition, the UCR programs provided reliable statistics to the criminal justice system and this can be used in developing new laws to curb crime and to deal with the criminals. In essence, the Uniform Crime Reporting is very vital to the criminal justice system because, it provides vital information on crime and criminals. With the information, the criminal justice administration is able to review the ways to curb crime in our society.
