Problems Facing Human Services Clients

Human service specialists have usually had a gratifying career. They are bestowed with the chance to offer assistance to people who are in great need of it. Despite the fact that this profession can be worthwhile, regrettably, this zone of proficiency can be emotionally wearing due to numerous difficulties that the clients in human service endure including shortage of resources accessible to them. These difficulties are, however, not restricted to, financial inequality, child well-being, poverty and other social glitches. Although these challenges are manifested every day, human service specialists are skilled enough to notice the subjugation and social unfairness and to come up with solutions to the challenges and curb them. For instance, human service experts are more conscious of the mutual denominator or a feature that is existing amongst a family existing in poverty, an enslaved individual in addition to an individual suffering with disabilities. The solo feature that is mutual from this instance would be a deficit of resources as a result of their social identities.
Whereas it is the objective of human service specialists to endorse social parity for all, unluckily, it is not the case in today’s society. Most of the clients in human service, confront many biases for the reason that they fall into a particular group, and that class can be categorized as the underprivileged, serving as an example of a financial equality. This is a key challenge that these clients in the human service go through every day. In most cases, they are victimized and biased by particular people as a result of wealth inequality (Craven and Hirnle 2009).
Some of the clients, particularly children, have a problem with dwelling places and their basic needs are not met as per their expectations. Some parents who have the custody of such children often mistreat them by physically abusing them and even domestic violence resulting to need for the kids to be taken care of in foster homes. These children are often traumatized since the only perfect place to take good care of children is normally at home. Elderly people are faced with the challenge of not living independently in their homes. They at times lack someone to take care of their personal needs for instance, acquisition of meals. Some are left to live alone in their homes and they lack care needed to keep them strong and this subject them to great physical and mental torment. Hospice care for those who are about the end of their life is at times not provided causing anguish and suffering to them (Rafferty, et al., 2008).
Individuals who are homeless are also neglected whereby they fail to meet their basic needs. They are also discriminated in organizations where they can learn new skills that can help them to cater for their daily needs. As a result of homelessness, such clients require treatment for ailments that might be due to poor shelter. Such treatment is commonly unavailable and these homeless individuals have to languish through illnesses that cause more serious health issues including untimely death. It is usually very tough to cater to the immigrants who seek help so that they can acclimatize with the new nation. They also require resources including housing as well as occupation (Craven and Hirnle 2009). When they are referred to places they can find legal help services, they are discriminated and their needs are not addressed as per the required guidelines.
Furthermore, most of the people who are struggling with addiction are looked down upon by the society and are stigmatized. In some instances, the rehabilitation facilities to take care of them are not enough, while others are overpopulated resulting to poor services. Both treatment and therapy is inadequate and this fails to propagate the recovering process of these individuals with substance abuse problem. Those clients who have criminal records face a great challenge of stigma from the society that fails to cooperate with the human service department to see that they change for the better. Therefore, instances of backsliding to crime are high since the required support is not offered by those who are closest to them (Craven and Hirnle 2009).
It is worth noting that clients living with disabilities are at risk of suffering depression due to discrimination in organizations such as schools, hospitals and even at the workplace. These clients are denied their right to take high positions in businesses or participating in community developments since they are stigmatized as result of their physical conditions. Helping those who get disabled to adapt to their new physical form is at times a challenge since rehabilitation facilities offering such services fail to offer proper care services. The daily activities become tough for them to bear resulting in mental agony and low self-esteem (Rafferty et al., 2008).

Specific Helping Skills That Can Be Used By Clients

There are skills that clients who are served in the department of human services can adapt in order to elevate the way they care for such clients. One of the paramount way to look for alternative methods to help clients is through service orientation. The clients should campaign for workers to innovate suitable ways through which they can improve the services offered to clients to better their lives. Perceptiveness in terms of the society is crucial since it helps the clients to comprehend the reasons as to why people act the way they do. This is important in understanding the diverse ways in which the society can meet the needs of the clients so as to serve them in the most convenient manner (Craven and Hirnle 2009).
Dialogue with other stakeholders is vital in order to garner information. Effective conveyance of information will help the clients to seek serve with knowledge of how to handle a variety of situations. In order for the clients to successfully understand the service providers, it is important to become active listeners. By listening attentively without interrupting unnecessary and asking appropriate questions will help them to have access of all points being addressed (Craven and Hirnle 2009). It is also worth noting that individual assessment is crucial to analyze whether one is being rendered services as per the provided guidelines.
Monitoring individual performance helps in ensuring workers are made aware to improve on areas they are having challenges in while maintaining their strong points. Combating problems call for clients who are critical thinkers. This skill is very useful, particularly if a person is finding solutions to underlying problems. Rational judgment in conjunction with informed decisions are a sure way to identify weakness as well as the strengths of the proposed solutions so as to get the service that is in accordance to the set principles. Moreover, it is essential to have the skill of persuasion so as to persuade others to assess their behavior and adapt the best. This skill comes handy when dealing with workers who are pessimistic and are likely to accord clients with behavior that is not in line with the human service department’s expectations. It is therefore crucial to persuade workers to adapt the recommended norms so that clients can benefit from the services offered. Time is one factor that cannot be underestimated when it comes to management of services (Liu 2008).
Workers should devise ways of managing their work efficiently to ensure all clients are served accordingly to mitigate cases where clients are poorly served. Therefore, clients should acquire this skill to correct the workers where they notice there are management hitches. As far as procedures and programs are adhered to, learning new strategies to make this happen is essential. Methods that are appropriate during training or following instructions should be embraced so as to solve complex issues that may be presented during the procedures. The clients are also entitled to have the skills necessary for system evaluations. Categorizing measures or signs of system enactment and the activities needed to advance or make necessary corrections to the performance, comparative to the objectives of the system. Other than evaluation, other skills are also significant in the analysis of the system (Liu 2008).
In conclusion, devising ways in which a system should function and the manner in which changes in circumstances, procedures, as well as the environment will have an impact on the outcomes. Reconciliation of differences that are common in workplace calls for negotiation skills. Clients as well as workers may have differences that are hindering suitable rendering of services and the only way to take care of such discrepancies is through negotiation.
