A sat nav system (satellite navigation) is an arrangement of satellites that assists the users in determining the position of a device within a few meters to anywhere on the earth’s surface. Similar arrangement that covers the complete global are is known as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Every developed or developing nation has its own GNASS, such as NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) from United States, Union’s Galileo navigation system from Europe, Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) from Russia, Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) from India, and BeiDou from China. All these sat nav’s have their own features such as coding (CMDA/FDMA), orbital height, and number of satellites, frequency, period, and evolution per side real day.
Radio Navigation (radionavigation) is the use of radio frequencies to control a position on the Earth. It is similar to radiolocation, which is a type of radio determination. The three common types of radionavigation, are long range, short range, and satellite. Before the advent of GPS, even before World War II, radio navigation provided a bearing to a station. The ground-based radio navigation system only got introduced in the 20th century, in which the users estimated how far away they were from a communicating tower whose location was already identified. The location is easily identified on using several towers. For example, in LORAN (long range navigation) a hyperbolic radio navigation system; each tower could provide long range up to 500 miles, and was accurate up to 250 meters short range.
The other radio navigation systems were OBOE, GEE-H, DECCA NAVIGATOR, OMEGA-VLF, Shoran (Short Range), DME (Distance measuring equipment), and TACAN (Tactical air navigation system). These radio navigation systems work well when out of sight of the ground or the skies, however, they need heavyweight equipment in the aircraft and a tough ground arrangement and infrastructure.
