Globalization has been a social condition defined by tight global economy, cultural, political as well as environmental interconnections that have made the existing boundaries and borders irrelevant. Globalization has transformed the social life of people in different parts of the world. The effects of globalization in African continent and the entire world are many and ever changing. For instance, the wide spread of maize in African can be traced back to sixteenth century.. According to the information documented by James C. McCann, the crop has had huge impact on the lives of people in Africa. There has been a widespread of maize in Africa thereby becoming a dominant staple food among Africans.
The importance of Maize in African cannot be overlooked. Around 95% of the crop is mainly consumed by humans as compared to other continents whereby the crop is mainly cultivated as an industrial raw material or for livestock feed. The crop is grown either as a grain crop or as a vegetable crop. The book reveals that the crop was introduced in Nigeria from the Northern region and formed basis for establishment of Asante Empire of West Africa in the 18th century, due to adequate supply of transportable food.
The influence and spread of maize crop in the world varied from region to region due to different reasons for adoption. For instance, the crop spread rapidly in Venice’s po Valley as compared to Ethiopian, during the 16th and 17th century. Africa resulted from development of industrialization activities of the 20th centuries. It was in the 20th century that African continent witnessed outbreak of American fungus, in Sierra Leone, leading to development of new maize varieties. The widespread of maize in Africa also had negative impacts to the population as well as the environment. The maize pollen is mosquito foods, thereby contributing in malaria outbreak. Consumers are mainly exposed to Aflatoxins and mycotoxins .
Currently, globalization has been associated with the decline of both national cultures and traditional values. For example, there world has recently experienced the effect of Americanization with the claims of eradicating terrorism (John 2013). Sporting activities have also been playing a bigger role in promoting globalization.
There are many benefits associated with hosting a global event. Despite South Africa spending almost $4 billion on infrastructure, transport and broadcasts, the returns were overwhelming pushing the profits to over $1 billion. Looking at the production of the football, the exercise brought together people and corporations from different countries including China, India and Taiwan. The event enabled the world to witness great performance from Shakira during opening ceremony. Another individual whose fame increased due to the event is Diego Forlan from Uruguay. His goal scoring instincts, elegance and speed resulted into global followers. The two individuals are just a few of people who have gained fame due to globalization.
