China Adams has been living in Los Angeles, California for more than 20 years already.

Adams visited Tamalpais High School (often abbreviated as Tam) located in Mill Valley, California. She earned her Bachelor Degree from University of California, Los Angeles, and her Masters from University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The artist does not earn any income from her works. She has a day job instead. She is currently working as a Professor in the Finе Arts department at University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
Adams is a many-sided artist. She is known for her conceptual art and mixed media works. She does not stick to one technique or media but likes to experiment. Her works include collagе, papеrmaking, hand sewing and even garments.
China Adams’ works and exhibits are very diverse in topics. Still, I think there is a bigger theme that characterizes all of them, which is a struggle with materialism. She tries to use the most inexpensive materials and as little of them as possible. China also addresses the issues of waste, recycling, reuse and mortality, as well as more political ones, like those of class and gender.
In order to better understand Adams’ art it might be useful to look at her relationship with her possessions. She said she was too anxious about their fate, so she disposed them. She said: “Now it is off my shoulders. It is in someone's collection where it is treated like something precious.” I think it is an interesting and brave perspective.
I liked very much what she said in one of her interviews about creating her works: “So it’s like this complete imagined exotic journey that all takes place in my apartment”. Even though according to her, she never had a studio, from her words I understand that she really enjoys what she is doing.
When Adams was asked about the advice she could give to the young artists, she said that probably the most important is to learn how to deal with the criticism as that is an unavoidable part of being an artist. I think that is a good advice.
I was very interested to learn more about China and her works because to my mind, she is a very unusual artist with strong and unique ideas and perspectives. China Adams really enjoys and believes in what she does. Sometimes her works are not easy to understand but there is always a meaning behind them. I think they are definitely worth seeing.
