Right at the crossroads of famous historical trails like the El Camino Real, there are a lot of reasons to appreciate historic Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas. One of them is that Nocadoches is a bicycle friendly city, with an extensive bike trail system, numerous bike shops and cycling clubs that are all here to support you, whatever kind of cycling you want to do. Maybe you just want to get around town, or go off-road and hit the many miles of mountain bike trails the city has to offer. As a bicycle friendly city, you will find Nocagdoches an easy and fun place to ride.
If you just want to get around town, this is the city for you. It is relatively flat, and the weather is warm enough to ride most months out of the year. On the city website, there is an awesome color map, that will help you get around town. It can help guide you to all the paved bike trails, unpaved trails, historic points of interests, restroom facilities and even water fountains. Like I said, Nocagdoches is a bike friendly town.
Maybe you are more serious, and want to go off road for some mountain biking or BMX action. According to the Nocagdoches Chamber of Commerce, the mountain bike trail system has over eight miles of mountain bike trails in a huge thirty acre wilderness wonderland. However, most of these trails are for advanced riders, include steep hills, jumps and single-track trails. The trails were built by local volunteers and students from Steven F. Austin State University. If you want to go explore these trails, park at Starr Ave. and N. University Dr. and follow the signs.
Nocadhoches wants you to stay safe. The city has created a bicycle safety program called CYCLES, which can help you make sure your bicycling experience is both fun and safe. - The C stands for Check: Check over your bicycle and make sure it is working properly. Check the brakes and tires.
- The Y is for Your helmet: Nocagdoches is in Texas after all, so it is not required by law, but it is highly suggested for your safety. City bike clubs all require helmets.
- The Cis for Conspicuous: Make sure that motorists can see you! Wear bright clothing and make eye contact with motorists.
- The L is for Law: Bicyclists are required to follow the same rules as motorists. Ride on the right side of the street, stop as stop signs, and go with the flow of traffic.
- The E is for Example: The cyclists of Nocagoches set a good examples are ambassadors of the sport.
- The S stands for Share the Road: Always be friendly and be respectful of motorists and pedestrians.
There are so many bicycling resources in Nocagdoches it is hard to mention them all. The Nocagdoches Bicycle Club has a website that lists local bike shops, group rides and trail maps. It is a great website to check out before you start your Nocagdoches bicycling adventure.
Like I said, Nocadoches is a bicycle friendly city. Whatever it is you want to do, from mountain biking, road racing or just riding around the city to see our historical monuments, please stay safe and have fun.
