In the past the health promotion and illness prevent-based education activities focused on the general population. The emphasis was living a healthy life by eating a balance diet, improve sanitation, going to the gym and living a stress free life. This was a great injustice and unethical to the have-nots in the society. Since the less influent in the society did not have access to these resources. As a result, these measures didn’t bare much fruits since the social, political and economical factors of the society were not put into considerations. Additionally, these measures did not address individual life style, culture and behavior (Goldberg, 2012). However, the new teaching principles and methodologies recognized the individuality of a patient and the needs of the society by address the diversity of the population.
How do teaching principles, varied learning styles (for both nurses and patients), and teaching methodologies impact the approach to education?
The population is becoming diverse each single day. This poses a significant challenge to nurses in delivering a quality and safe health care to all patients. Additionally, it becomes hard to formulate a health care plan which promises a better outcome. Thus, culture competency is an essential to every nurse. Therefore, the teaching principles varied learning styles and teaching methodologies helps a nurse to understand the patient. Hence, a nurse is a position formulates an educational plan which suits the patient lifestyle, behavior, culture, economic standards and values. Moreover, they help to create a good rapport with the patient from the beginning and the patient willingness to learn. This allows exchange of information between the patient and the nurse. As a result the nurse will be able to know the lifestyle, culture, educational level, behavior and social-economic level of the patient. As such, the nurse is in a good position to advice and educates the patient on how to live a healthy life and prevent illnesses. These teaching principles varied learning styles and teaching methodologies addresses the hierarchy needs of the patient, passion and help them change their behavior/ lifestyle towards optimal health state. How do health care providers overcome differing points of view regarding health promotion and disease prevention? Provide an example.
However, it is not always easy to educate a patient to change lifestyle, behavior, belief and culture rituals. For example to ask a patient who is addicted to smoking to stop smoking and he/she doest have any smoking related illness such as lung cancer. Or a woman who wonder whether traditional medicines are a better option since she has been readmitted. These two scenarios present two distinct cases which cannot be treated with the same education program. Therefore, to overcome these two problems, a nurse should formulate two different education programs which are unique and centered on each patient. This gives the two patients the chance to be involved in the treatment and share their ideas, believes including the stereotypes of their culture or society. Hence, from this discussion, a nurse is able to educate each patient on the important aspects regarding health promotion and disease prevention (Saha et al., 2008). Additionally, where the nurse a has no some expertise e.g. the woman’s culture beliefs and tradition, the nurse can incorporate the help of the other health practitioners in the hospital and at the community level who will help to address the needs and the doubts of the patient. This team effort will make the patient understand the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and why he/she should consider adopting the advice of the nurse. This approach makes sure there is no biasness or inequalities in giving education concerning health promotion and disease prevention since all the avenues have been address by the experts in those fields and patient welfare has been put into consideration (Goldberg, 2012).
