River Woods Team Assignment
Question # 1
Heritage Appliance Company plants to develop a plant in River Woods. Previously, the marketing operations in Heritage Appliance are headed by the vice president. The manufacturing operations were headed by the senior vice president. The company did not have a general manager. Each department in all plants reported either to the director of the production and to the director of engineering. In the new plant, the plant manager will head all functions with the exception of marketing.
Challenges that will be faced by the new plant manager will vary with the scope. The first challenge arises from coming up with new lines of communication and maintaining the integrity. The manager may also find it difficult to work out bugs in new applications, which are more advanced than the previous ones. Additionally, the manager will find it difficult to upgrade the skills of workers transferred from other plants. Also, challenges will be found in appliance design and production. Other changes are effective handling of worker’s complaints. Being a small plant in a place where employees are not satisfied, the complaints will lead formation of unions in a company that did not have unions.

Qualifications of the new plant manager are he or she must have a degree in industrial management. The manager must have experience in the manufacturing process. The manager must also have managerial, analytical, communication and strategic skills. Sources of power identified are legitimate and expert power. Legitimate power arises from one's position while expert power is derived from having knowledge in a particular field. Type of power is formal power, which entails legitimate power. Additionally, there is personal power especially expert power.
