According to a report submitted by the Center for Disease Control And Prevention, smoking among the youth ages 12 to 17 years in Texas ranked 11th out of the 50 states . Teen smoking accounts to 9.5% of the total youth population in the Texas as revealed in the survey. The alarming statistics can be related to a study conducted in 1998 suggesting that a vast majority of teen smokers have caught this bad habit at school . At present, smoking is a growing problem in Texas as more and more teens are lured to try smoking as a result of peer pressure. In this paper the focal concern of second hand smoking relates to the psychological and physical impact that smoking actually does to the youth. The psychological impact relates to a weak personality, depression and anxiety as a resultant of peer-pressure. On the other hand, the physical implications of second hand smoking among the youth relates to compromised lung functioning, exhaustion and lethargy .
The need to understand what potentially triggers the youth to be lured to a negative behavior has been explained under William McGuire’s Social Inoculation Theory. The social inoculation theory suggests that pressures to resist attitudes and behaviors amidst social pressure are established through communication . McGuire insisted that social pressure cannot be overlooked. In the same manner that youths would always feel overwhelmed with the necessity to comply and respond to pressure because of the consequences that might be beset upon them. Nevertheless, McGuire believe that there is nothing wrong by allowing a child to the in the midst of these negative behaviors. The author of the social inoculation theory explains this by using the analogy used in medical inoculation process. In medicine, a body is often exposed to weak viruses in an attempt to make the body resistant to the virus by allowing it to develop antibodies which will be used to combat the virus . Similarly, McGuire used this interpretation in the field of social psychology. Smoking is developed because majority of the youth are pressured to adapt the negative behavior for the purpose of fitting in . However, McGuire insisted that parents and the academe should not fret if the youths are exposed to this environment because in return they will develop a resistance to fight the urge or the pressure imposed upon them after seeing what it can potentially do.
In a study initiated in 2000, the authors cited that one effect of secondhand smoking particular for teens who are pressured to participate in such activity results to depression . In this study the authors said that the effect of smoking among the youth varies as compared with the adults. In several studies, adult smokers report feeling light, active and energized with smoking . In Texas on the other hand, the Houston Independent School District which was requested to participate in a study that would evaluate and assess the efficacy of a technique that would deter teen non-smokers from smoking revealed that teens respond to smoking based on how they are being drawn by what they see . Hence, applying McGuire’s social inoculation theory into the program that would prevent the problem from progressing is highly encouraged.
