Objectives

The main objective of this lesson is to educate students on the important role ethics plays in developing effective leadership. The lesson will also be aimed at enhancing a student’s knowledge of what leadership entails and how ethics plays a party in developing a bigger picture for tomorrow’s leaders (Wankel, Stachowicz-Stanusch, 2011).

Introduction

In order to develop an effective lesson on ethics and leadership, the student will first be tasked to define the terms from their perspective. This will create a baseline in which a teacher can use to gauge a student’s understanding of the lesson. The teacher will then go ahead to define both terms in a clear and conceive manner. The definitions of the terms will help zero in on the objective of the study on how the two terms, this is ethics and leadership are interrelated to each other. Understanding the definitions of the terms will help introduce the students to the lesson from a centralized point of view.

Specific learning activities

In order for the lesson to be effective, it will be divided into five segments of ten minutes each. The whole timeline will be divided into different segments so as to cover the lesson as a whole.

Part one

The first lesson will include the definitions of the two terms, which can be thought of as being the key words in this learning process. This definition will help set the foundation in which the lesson will depend on. It is important to note that as explained earlier students will be given a chance to define the words from their personal understanding. The whole segment will consist of defining the terms. Definition, in this case, is thought as being extremely critical in achieving the set objectives of the lesson.
In this case, leadership will be defined as being the act or process of leading individuals within any organisation or group so as to achieve a set objective (Shapiro, Gross, 2013).
Ethics will be defined as being the principles, mostly based on one’s moral outlook, which governs an individual’s behaviour towards something or other individuals.

Part two

In the second part, the students will be introduced to the concept of leadership style and how ethics plays a crucial part in the type of leadership a leader chooses. By discussing this concept, one will be able to introduce the students to the different roles that leaders have. This will zero in to the main idea of how ethics is applied to leadership. By observing the style of leadership and the role a leader plays in the different style, one will be able to draw a picture of what ethical leadership is and what it means to be an ethical leader.

Part three

The third part will entail introducing students to the different functions of a leader. In order to understand leadership, it is paramount to understand what a leader is expected to do. In addition, by understanding the different functions of a leader, one can ascertain to the students how ethics plays a big part in the day-to-day activities of a leader. The thought that a leader is tasked of with doing something means that he has to apply some sought of ethicality to it. This will help in hammering down the functions of ethics (Komives, 2013).

Part four

The fourth part will include looking at leadership from a historical perspective. This will give a wider angle to which one can use to achieve the objectives. By studying the history of leadership and different leadership, one will be able to draw a student closer to understanding the role ethic plays in leadership. Some of the historical background that will be covered in this part include, different types of leaders during the first and second world war and the implications ethics had in both starting and finishing the war. One will also look at some of the different types of decisions that have been made after the war to date by different leaders and what and whether they were ethical enough or not.

Part five

Being the last segment, the fifth part will act as a conclusion where all the other lessons are pulled together in order to connect them to the main idea and objective of the study. In this part, the importance that ethics plays in leadership will be looked at in a wide manner where students will be engaged in a discussion on what advantages ethics plays in leadership. The discussion will help in creating an environment where student offer their ideas to understand better from their perspective.

Understanding

In order to check whether a student has understood the different the lesson random questions will be asked to different students. The questions will be based on the different notions that will be discussed n the lesson. Student will also be given the opportunity to ask questions on some of the areas that need clarification. In future lessons, students will be quizzed on the study.

Conclusion and a preview

In conclusion, the lesson will be aimed at impacting understanding of the topic to the students through the five parts a student will be able to get a holistic picture of the importance of ethics in leadership. By the end of the lesson, a student is expected to know the definitions of key terms, the styles of leadership and how ethics influences each style, the functions entailed in leadership and how the factions go hand in hand with ethics and a historical perspective on leadership, and what part ethics has played in the development of holistic leaders.
