Abstract
There is controversy regarding the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the nursing profession despite its widespread use in the population. Thus, it is difficult to make clinical decisions as to employing CAM in the management of pain in sickle cell disease. Resolving the controversy requires an understanding of the history of CAM use in the United States and worldwide and in the nursing profession. It is also important to know how CAM is regulated.
