It is significant that a prospective employer understands the goals of a nurse to gauge whether the employee can fit in with the institution. The employer determines definite set of skills or qualities from employees, which match the necessary skills to execute a task. However, beyond job-specific skills, goals of employees are important to employers, as it highlight how appropriate employee background aligns or match common employer requirements. Employers need goal-driven individuals who keep a productive environment and confidently mobilize, coach, and motivate co-workers to obtain high standards of performance (Jones, 2005).
Short-term goal of a nurse consist of successfully doing well academically in the nursing class, then passing professional examination offered by national board. Provided it is achieved, a nurse can anticipate to be employed in a medical-surgical institution and expect to hone skills for a graduate nurse. Choosing or preferring medical-surgical nursing like a beginning point, for example, is prudent because it help a nurse develop clinical skills. Apart from educational milestone as a short-term goal, it is significant for a nurse to receive recommendation letters that may open doors or opportunities and get nursing career on track or off on the proper foot. Being off on the proper foot, can help a nurse in gaining experience, widening medical knowledge base, and becoming proficient or expert in nursing skills.
Long-term goals as a nurse consist of becoming an active member or participant in the nursing profession, joining the ANA (American Nurses Association), lobbying for development of nurses to give prescription independently, and attending seminars. Optimistically, in the next 5 years I anticipate having a degree in advanced practice nurse within the field or discipline of family healthcare as well as working within an emergency room. The new responsibilities will require learning novel skills, which will not only benefit the institution, but also assist in attaining personal career goals. It will be interesting to experience novel challenges as well as exciting to invest 5 years time specializing within a career that is extremely motivating and interesting.
Thereafter, I anticipate joining management role and nurse teaching role. Management role would permit demonstration of personal aptitude for managing junior workers and having more roles. As a dedicated nurse, anticipate improving both the institution and personal career through enthusiasm and commitment. Nurse teaching responsibility may seem a daunting prospect or endeavor after serving solely within a clinical or health services provision environment for many years.
