The internet has allowed many organizations to be reached by diverse audiences from the different parts of the world. International organizations like the World Health Organization is a universal institution that is tasked to coordinate among different nations, institutions like governments and health facilities worldwide in the goal of fostering health and wellbeing among its members. Nevertheless, there are organizations that are strictly base in a particular country, but is open to the idea of global expansion and foreign investments to ensure the growth of the company. In lieu with this purposes, company websites have been fashioned to assign a particular section in its official website that is particularly designed to incorporate information about the organization. Commonly, this section is under the heading or title “About Us”. Immediately, viewers would already know that the information presented in this segment are all related to the company profile. This paper will review an organization’s About Us page taking special consideration of its presentation, layout, content, and purpose. Specifically, this paper will focus on the World Health Organization as the chosen organization subject to review. This is in the hope of offering substantial criticism to the effectiveness of the site’s about us page in relation to its advocacy and relevance in the society.
1. Identify the Web site, the sender, and perceived receiver
The World Health Organization is the United Nations’ specialized agency that is directed to oversee the health status of the different nations (World Health Organization, 2015). The organization serves as a leader that addressed the global health issues and all other concerns relating to health—research, norm setting, policy, and reform agenda and technical assistance. The organization is headed by a Director-General appointed for a five-year term by the representatives of the member countries. The Assembly shall elect a 34-man team who all possess qualifications related to the health profession (World Health Organization, 2015). This team shall take a seat on the Executive Board for a three-year term. The information about the organization is presented in the section “About WHO”. Inclusive to this section are details referring to the organization’s description of responsibilities, its roles in public health, its priorities, resources, history, funding and resources, sub-organizations and annual reports. The WHO is trying to communicate its agenda to the people through this section. The message is not only directed to a certain group or class, but also to everyone else because the issue of health involves every individual. It is a universal topic that concerns everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, social status and religion.
2. Analyze the integrated business communication
The WHO is a non-profit organization. However, to operate and to meet its goals and agendas it necessarily requires the appropriate funds. Hence, the About Us page of the World Health Organization includes details about funding and resources. It communicates the organization's plans and the appropriated monetary budget for every project. In addition, it is also important to establish that the website is medical-oriented. Therefore, it communicates medically-related materials and content. Nevertheless, amidst the technical details that the site is designed for, the manner, by which the information are delivered, are presented in a less technical manner. The site tried to avoid the use of jargons and terminologies that are not familiar to everyone. However, considering the technical details of the field it is assigned to, such technical terminologies cannot be completely avoided. In such cases, the website developer and the writers assigned in updating the site and contents ensure that the terms are explained at the level of understanding by someone who is not in the medical profession. The terminologies and technical details are explained using languages that are within the capacity of a common person.
3. Assess the media richness of the section
The page contains well-publicized materials and materials that the media gravitates. Considering the the World Health Organization is a global institution, it features events and information that are participated and joined by the organization. These items found on the website's page makes the section rich with resources that are media-oriented. The page, however, has a balance of informative data that are not substantially classified as "media materials". This makes the page and the section of the website considerably able to articulate a factual, informative data and an update of the organization's milestone and progress.
4.Describe how the message is framed.
The message is framed for the understanding and appreciation of everyone, including those who does not have the background and special training relating to health and medicine. Considering this format, the website becomes encompassing meaning it is not only framed to fit a certain group or class of people but instead it becomes universal. The contents are not composed of hearsays or guesses not fully substantiated by verifiable facts. In addition, the information and facts presented in the website are all sourced from credible authors who are all authorities in the field of medicine and other disciplines of health.
5. Identify opinion leaders.
The opinion leaders for the site includes the members of the Assembly and the Board of the World Health Organization. The organization also hires a third-party representative who are regularly feed with the activities and developments in the organization. They are those responsible in providing articles that are to be published in the website. These opinion leaders are in the best position to render their views because of the participation and their capacity to provide factual and relevant information.
6. Make recommendations for improving word choice.
In an article published on a blog it was mentioned that the “About Me” page is among the commonly neglected section of a website but is the highly ranked page in majority of reputable and commonly visited sites in the World Wide Web . Using this statement by Nutter, it can be said the World Health Organization’s website has given enough thought when it framed this section of their website. There were sufficient information present in the page which allowed their diverse audience to get to know the organization and identify with the organization’s goals and objectives. Nevertheless, the aspect of the site being “friendly and personal” seems to be missing from the overall presentation of the WHO’s “About Us” page. It was very serious and highly professional. However, this tone is quite understandable considering the nature of the organization. If there is anything that requires modification or improvement, it would have to be the approach of site being more people-oriented. Although the approach was given a less technical feel to it by using non-technical terms and attempting to explain the concepts in a less inferior impression, many would still find most of the contents less inviting to read.
