Appropriate Communication Methods for Managers in Long-Term Care Rehabilitation Facilities
Effective communication among managers in long-term and short-term rehabilitation centers is important owing to the fact that it has a direct impact on the lives of patients admitted (Maude, 2013). Since people have different ways of communication and understanding information, the three most important ways of communication for managers within long-term rehabilitation centers are: The use of oral/verbal communication i.e. when intending to implement new policies and the use of visual modes of communication such as power-points and demonstrations i.e. for new techniques for patient management; and cross-departmental communication.
Importance of Oral and Visual Communication Techniques within the Organization
The rehabilitation centre involves handling and dealing with lives of diverse patients; in addition, it entails dealing with diverse workforce, characterized by different perceptions and knowledge (Mott, 2011). In this regard, the use of oral and visual modes of communication would create the following benefits: To begin with, people have different capacities to understand information communicated through oral channels and visual channels; in this aspect a combination of both oral and visual communication ensures that those that are not capable of understanding oral language benefit from the visual language and vice-versa. On the other hand, the use of oral language ensures that a manger is capable of determining whether information has been understood or not (Preston, 2009). This can be recognized through immediate feedback from colleagues and other staff i.e. those requesting for clarification et cetera.
Application of certain aspects of oral and visual communication such as tone, body movement among others, are crucial as they assist an audience to determine the degree of important of a message, thus effective implementation. In relation to cross-departmental communication, it is crucial as it enhances coordination among the departments within the facility, thus ensuring uniformity and high quality service provision.
Internal Relationships Considered
One of the internal relationships that have to be considered before expanding the services offered by the facility is inter-departmental relationship. That is, the level of relationships between departments concerned i.e. how staff from one department affects the performance of another department or how one department relies on resources from another department. This is important as it will determine the amount and types of resources required as the organization expands its services hire and train staff.
Additionally, knowledge sharing and availability of information regarding provision of long-term rehabilitation services between departments will also be considered. This is crucial as it informs the managers on the employees who should be hired and the kind of knowledge needed to train employees.
External Relationships Considered
Rehabilitation centers play a significant role in any society; this means that a variety of external factors have an influence on their successes and performance (Dixon, 2012). Considering the case study, it is apparent that external factors may have a significant effect on its success. In this aspect, the external relations that must be considered when expanding its services are: Prevalence of health cases that require long-term rehabilitation services within a community. This is an important consideration as it determines the type and amount of resources that are needed in expansion of the facility. Additionally, the facility must consider its relationship with policy makers and the donors/. Policy makers through implementation of policies have the capacity to determine whether or not an institution has met the required standards for providing long-term rehabilitation services (Mott, 2011). Consequently, donors and other sources of funding such as local governments must be considered as they have a direct effect on the capacity of the institution to expand to long-term service provision.
