Should College Athletes Be Paid Or Not Essays Example

The issue of paying college athletes is one of much debates issues in the United States of America. There is a difference of opinion on paying college athletes. A number of people say that college athletes should be paid while many others opine that college athletes should not be paid for playing sports in colleges. Both sides mention different reasons to prove their version right. This paper intends to discuss the issue and looks into reasons why college athletes should not be paid.
People, who oppose paying college students, say that college athletes get various benefits including education, medical care, food, lodging, and travel expenses. Paying them additionally for playing sports is absolutely wastage of public money. This money can be used in improving standard of college education. This money can be used for realizing the idea of free education for all. This money also can be utilized in supporting students who are unable to pursue their education due to growing expenses of education.
Paying huge money to college athletes affects their performance in sports. College athletes expect more money after every tournament and their expectation converts into greed. College athletes start playing for money instead of playing for excellence in sports. Such attitude may also encourage them to involve into unethical practices that ultimately destruct the pleasure and spirit of sports. Involvement of huge money into sports should be regulated for the interest of sports (Mitchell, 2014).
Fred Bowen writes in his article in The Washington post that college athletes are not paid huge money in all games. The huge amount of money is only involved in soccer and basketballs. This money cannot attract talented sportsmen from other areas like swimming, running, athletics, badminton or tennis. This money is concentrated in soccer and basketball and other sports are neglected which is not good for sports in longer term. Youngsters are attracted towards games that generate money (Bowen, 2014).
Experts claims that college athletes should not be paid, as it also discourages other students who are not very good in sports, but are brilliant students. Students who are not good in sports do not get any facility like free tuition, food or traveling expenses. Such practices suggest students that studying is not going to help them in getting any monetary reward. Brilliant students get discourage because college athletes get huge amount of money even when they bunk classes and do not attend minimum number of classes.
Considering the abovementioned issue and its various aspects, the paper concludes that paying college athletes is not necessary at all. This money affects college athletes in negative sense, instead of doing any good to them. Paying college athletes is similar to wasting money and this money can be used in various other activities or tasks that benefit students in real sense. This issue needs attention of people and a wide consideration from different sections of the society without any prejudice.
