Reflective of implications pertinent to policy development, and demographic analysis in terms of criminology expectations and implementation of planning, the report reviewed portrays a significant analysis to demonstrate needs for future use. Demographic representations help drive decisions in implementing plan development in terms of gender, age, and the sociological realities of ethnic studies as pertains to criminology. According to Savelsberg and Flood (2011) U.S. criminology findings utilize quantitative predictive measures as data to study philosophical theory, and posit that “lessons can be learned,” as professionals advance an understanding of “what role interaction rituals play in criminology,” both vertical and horizontal networks (p. 22). Next, a summary of population trending ensues.

Populations Projections:

Population projection trends divulge an increase of incarcerated adult population from just over half of one percent to nearly a full percent (0.9 percent) – representing a gradual increase “through June 30, 2016” (p. 5). The slow two-year fiscal growth in prison populations in California explains a shift in credit earnings rate associated with Second-Strike offenders. Details of the trend gave way for University of California, Irvine (UCI) researchers to project both short-term and longer-term changes, as correlations to legal regulations govern “state prison and parole populations” (p. 7). Rife with a plethora of Tables to substantiate predictions, the report continues to a commentary on Court Commitments at the felonious level.

Court Commitments:

As a backdrop, the report details a gradual boost of both male and female prison populations between the years 2005 to 2014. The projected two-year cycle of 2014-2016, as aforementioned, renders a solid prediction of trends. Male populations increased just 2.2 percent (2005 to 2013), while female inmate numbers swelled “9.5 percent from June 30, 2005 to 2007,” then decreased by half from then to 2013 (p. 12). Court Commitments in California felon situations increased by nearly 7 percent, for midrange-aged adults.
The report also projected a breakdown with regards to active paroled, and juvenile populations. However, while the State Court Commitment grew 7.6 percent in fiscal year 2013/14, males comprised the most felon commitments “during all years examined,” as demonstrated in Table 7 and Figure 5 of the report (p. 15-17). That said, expected projected trends in Court Commitment is predicted to increase by 2.8% by FY 2015-16. Once again, working with two-year trend projections, the report indicates that actual numbered court commitments are projected to rise “5.2 percent from 38,790 to 40,789” in the fiscal years discussed, as pertains the period from fiscal year 2014-15 to 2015-16 (p. 16). Parole populations, according to the report calculated a total of 115,371 in June of 2005. The statistical counterpart for 2014 showed 44,499 which demonstrates a steady decrease over an approximate time frame of one decade. In conclusion, details of youth sex and violent offenders were documented in terms of cases. Primarily consisting of myriad Tables in support of their statistics, the report projected trends additionally organized by: (a) Average daily population, (b) males and females, and (c) Fiscal Year and quarterly determinants. Finally, in closing comments, the well-respected Pew Research institution has provided a useful report regarding the U.S. corrections situation including annual financials figures, crisis opportunities, as well as overview recommendations to help mitigate problems and create fruitful movements towards success.
