As it has come to my attention, I would like to comment on the letter you submitted to America, September 14th, 2002. For this, I would like to give a piece of my mind, as well as what can stand out best for us as humans, to stop violence and hatred on people with different practices, ideas and perceptions of things against our beliefs.
In reference to your letter, to begin with, I beg to differ in terms of “violence” as a way to solve the underlying disputes. Religion has always been a unifying factor, given that every human being serves the same God. It does not matter what way we worship, or we recognize His presence, but as long as He is the only one, religion should not be an aspect to fighting over. Every individual believes in their ways of worshipping. Thus, it would only be fair if religion would not be tarnished and brought down to a conflict level. Myself I have been an activist for many years, and through experience, I clearly understand what religious conflict could result to. I have fought racism, ethnicity, advocated human rights as well as fought against religious discrimination, but nothing came close to what religious conflicts resulted. As a matter of fact, during the religious difference in India, in early 1920,s, the only way I fought this spirit was through amicable grounds. By this I mean, violence is not the only way to solve disputes, and if anything, it is one of the “worst” methods that anyone would resort to.
Before Pakistan broke away from India, as an activist who had the freedom of speech and who advocated human rights despite any discrimination, I managed to bring the Christians and Muslim together. How did I do this? Of cause, it will be asked, and as I stated earlier, through non-violence.
Consequently, the use of threats stirs up more hatred and agitation towards fighting, and in the end we all end up losers. By this I mean, the reason for writing your letter was driven by hatred, full of threats, what you are capable of as well as what you intend to do. Not every individual will take it lightly, very few will understand but the larger population will translate it to a threat. I might understand where you are coming from, what you intend to establish, what you stand for and what you want to protect. However, the basis to address this will never be through threats. From my journey as a movement leader who intended to cut across the divide, I managed to make the voices of my people heard through a series of agreements and talks. I made this possible based on the grounds I established as well as my intentions were clear, with no intention of shedding blood. The civil disobedience campaign lasted for eight years, not until when I was arrested with some of my followers. However, the period lasted for a long time while our wish was being granted; respect to humanity being the key role of the movement. Through pain, resilience, determination and ambition, at no point did I ever mention any Islam of Christian, but all were my people.
During the movement, I perfectly understood what British is made off, given that I was inferior to them in terms of material weapons. My fight against the British was to give India a piece of mind and what entirely belonged to India remain as such. Violence resistance could lead to a lot of bloodsheds, given that India did not have superior weapons to fight against the British rule. Even though other international nations were included in the battle, still, Indi and Britain were the main parties. I speak of this since it reflects you and America. As we speak, America is known for its superpower and the threat they hold to any nation that serves as a threat to them. For the little you have, when all is finished, what will you gain? War is within your land, and it is your people, whom you send to battlefields; who then, shall be blamed for the innocent lives lost? America has got nothing to loose, thus, if you could use the “intelligence and non-material wealth” that your people and nation have, it would serve the purpose in the best way. Raising eyebrows on what your potential is shows your weakness as well as “go-to” points whenever the “enemy” wants to bring you down. Eventually, all will go down on you, your people will be educated against you and they are the ones who will help the “enemy” bring you down as well.
As a leader, it is important to consider all round aspects, but the key is the impact of decisions on your people. Following blindly or retaliating through hatred does not take the situation better. Instead, it worsens it. Taking sides widens the thrift, catalyze more violence and eventually, being the “inferior” nation you will always have a lot to loose. What about peaceful talks and non-violent ways of solving disputes? I believe that as year advance, everyone advances as well while the “old and awful habits” are shunned. Resorting to war is an example of this “habits” I am referring to. Thus, we should seek peace first. From my Bible, and I believe Quran would support this, one of the things that God hates most is the hands that shed innocent blood as well as feet that run to evil. It might not be in the Quran, but as I stated, we serve one God, and He should be the reason of unity in all our lands. From this, my point is simple; I have had much experience and somehow understand the traits of such practices of violence. Shun violence if peace is what we are advocating; seek better ways to be on mutual grounds as well.
